Group Vice President & Principal Engineer
Steven J. Murray is group vice president and a principal engineer in Exponent’s Data Sciences practice. His areas of expertise include failure analysis of electrical and mechanical systems, metallurgy, and the mechanical and electrical properties of materials, as well as electronics, magnetism, and magnetic materials. Dr. Murray works across a variety of industries to understand and analyze complex electrical and electronic systems, fracture and fractography, risk assessment, environmental effects, electrical and magnetic modeling, and materials defects. He has conducted multiple investigations related to potential product recalls and applies statistical methods to reach solutions for difficult failure problems in large populations of products. Dr. Murray is also a former consulting assistant professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University, where he taught Techniques of Failure Analysis from 2006 – 2015.
