Topic #1: Make Data Governance Fun: Gamifying Data Culture and Business Intelligence
Data Governance is daunting task for utilities with years of legacy knowledge and super subject matter expertise in nearly every department. Siloed data from these departments can be a challenge and getting co-workers comfortable with something new in data analytics and new data quality standards is an uphill battle in change management. Rappahannock Electric Cooperative worked to centralize the access of data and break down the siloes between departments while also making the analytics and data governance fun. The solution was to make a one-stop shop for all business intelligence reporting by creating a universal navigation dashboard where all user views of dashboards were displayed using an API. This approach gave all employees one version of the truth, querying the same consistent data, while also creating some friendly gaming competition between departments for views. The result has been breaking down barriers and increased engagement in data analytics and the business partners around the cooperative.
