Drone imagery can be a powerful tool for utilities by speeding up processes while safely maintaining boots on the ground. Training these models to identify utility assets can be complex and time consuming.
Consumers Energy successfully utilizes three machine learning algorithms with greater than 70% precision to identify specific assets present within an image captured by a drone pilot. This model training process includes data from 16 different zones and incorporates the expertise of a team consisting of drone pilots, Low Voltage Distribution (LVD) planners and data scientists working together to capture and analyze approximately 1000 images and label 18 different utility assets.
